Michigan Wine Acreage Continues to Grow

the fruit by artsy_TA recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that Michigan’s wine grape acreage grew 12% from 2003 to 2006. Wine grape acreage in Michigan has increased 60% over the last 10 years.

“This updated data confirms the steady growth of the wine industry in the last decade,” said Michigan Department of Agriculture Director of Agriculture Don Koivisto, who also chairs the Michigan Grape and Wine Industry Council. “Michigan’s wineries are committed to the concept of regional identity by utilizing a high percentage of Michigan-grown fruit in their wines.”

By far the largest recent vineyard plantings have been riesling; but pinot grigio, pinot noir, cabernet franc and vidal have also shown substantial increases. Traditional European varieties now account for two-thirds of Michigan’s wine grape acreage. The balance is mainly comprised of hybrid varieties (crosses between European and native North American varieties).

The Michigan Grape and Wine Industry Council set a target for industry growth at 10,000 acres by 2024, with current wine grape acreage estimated at 1,800 acres.

I recently saw an ad for one of the Leelanau Wines and with Halloween on its way, I thought that would be the perfect housewarming wine also. Now, I can’t seem to find it and the store that advertised it, hasn’t received its shipment. I would love to try Witch’s Brew. It is to be a sweet red wine laced with cinnamon and flavors of the season, even suggesting it be served warm like Mulled Cider.
We live in Northern Ohio and I wonder if anyone else has tried this specimen?

The wine is made by Leelanau Cellars – you should contact them for further details!

My husband and I had Witch’s Brew this weekend for the first time at a restaurant while we were out celebrating our anniversary. We both loved it and were told it is only available for a short period of time each season. I have looked in the stores today and on your website but cannot see how I can order some. Please tell me how I can order it or what stores it is available in. I live in the southern part of Michigan. Thank you.
