Dawn broke bright over Leland Harbor on June 14, hours before the Leland Wine and Food Festival, a traditional introduction of wines from the previous harvest. It provided an informative opportunity to compare wines from the 2006 vintage with the 2007 wines just starting to be released.
Winemaker Shawn Walters of Leelanau Peninsula’s newest winery, Forty Five North, reflected that 2006 was a challenging year in the vineyard, with many winemakers dropping fruit in order to maximize quality, while Black Star Farms winemaker Lee Lutes and Brys Estate winemaker Coenraad Stassen commented upon the atypical 2007 vintage.
